Explain Your Interests

Your interests are what make you unique and interesting, so it’s important to include them in your statement of purpose. By discussing your interests, you can demonstrate to the admissions committee that you’re more than just your grades and test scores.

Write Stories. Not Statements because stories connect

If you want to leave an impression in the minds of the admission counsellors, depict your point of view using stories. But make sure that “Do not exceed the length specified in the application instructions for SOP.” If no length is specified, keep in mind that faculty may be reading hundreds of such Statements. Be brief but thorough. Unless absolutely necessary, do not discuss your life  instances. The recommended maximum length is four pages, but three is even better.

Use a Formal But Conversational Tone

Remember SOP is a document that will help you gain the winning ticket to your Dream University. Make sure that it is well drafted in a formal & Standard format. It’s a chance to show your writing skills, the more conversational, the clearer the message! Also, keep in mind the message you want to convey and frame your direction accordingly. In case you are using humor to explain your POV Beware, it can backfire!

When drafting your statement of purpose, it is important to decide how you want to portray yourself. Do you want to be seen as a competent and capable individual? Or do you want to be seen as someone who is creative and out-of-the-box? No matter how you decide to portray yourself, make sure that your SOP is honest & authentic. Be true to yourself and let your personality shine through. Admissions committees will be able to see through any attempts to artificially boost your image, so it is best to just be yourself.
